My Take on AI as an Artist, Programmer and Writer
Exploring the Opportunities and Risks of AI’s Emergence in the Creative and Technical Fields.
“Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history. Unfortunately, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks.”
— Stephen Hawking
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the science of making computers do things that require intelligence when done by humans. It has recently become a major focus in research and development and while AI has technically been around since the 1950s, it is only now that we’re starting to see it’s effects with the rise of programs like ChatGPT.
As an artist, AI-generated art is a growing concern for me and others in the community.
While AI-generated art is technically impressive, it lacks the creativity and emotional depth that traditional art possesses. As a digital artist, AI is especially scary as digital art is a lot more accessible to them.
AI-generated art may offer new possibilities for innovation, but it cannot replace the human intuition and emotion essential to art.
AI is literally trained on our artwork without permission, and this was confirmed when many artists saw some defining aspects of their work appear in the AI-generated art.
Even before ChatGPT’s popularity, artists have already noticed the influence of AI and have been revolting on it ever since.
The rise of AI-generated art may create a divide in the art industry between AI-generated art and traditional art. What I’m trying to say is that it could very much result in a devaluation of traditional art, which requires years of practice, skill, and creativity to produce.
AI is changing the programming landscape by enabling machines to learn and improve their performance over time. Programmers can now build intelligent systems that can process and analyze vast amounts of data and make informed decisions.
Obviously, this all is really exciting for me.
However, the use of AI in programming also comes with potential risks.
Biased algorithms and the loss of jobs due to automation are serious concerns that need to be addressed. While AI has the potential to create new job opportunities and enhance productivity, it also has the potential to replace many jobs with automation.
As a result, it is crucial for programmers to consider the ethical implications of AI in the workplace and to ensure that the deployment of AI systems does not lead to job displacement without proper support for workers.
Companies and governments should work together to implement policies and programs that support job retraining, education, and the creation of new jobs in fields that are less susceptible to automation.
AI is transforming the content writing industry by enabling machines to generate text with little or no human input.
AI-generated content can save time and reduce costs for content creators, but it also raises ethical concerns regarding the authenticity and quality of the content.
I logged onto Medium one day and I stumbled across an account that literally only used ChatGPT to write all of it’s articles. Its mission was to see if anyone could realize — I don’t know about other people, but I genuinely couldn’t.
My hope is that human writers will continue to play a critical role in content creation. I envision it as the AI only assisting with tasks like research, fact-checking, and generating data-driven insights. After all, articles that are handwritten are still far more successful than those written with AI.
These were just some of my thoughts from where I’m at in life.
Having that said, AI probably affects you just as much as me.
It’s definitely quite tempting to just turn a blind eye to this and to not form an opinion of your own, but doing that can be compared to sleeping through an astroid striking Earth.
I admit AI is a powerful tool that has the potential to transform various industries, including art, programming, and content writing. In fact the role of creativity and human input in AI-generated work is still debated, and the future of AI in various fields is yet to be fully explored.
We need to adopt a multi-disciplinary approach that incorporates ethical principles, involves diverse stakeholders, and develops innovative solutions.
By doing so, we can ensure that AI is used in a way that benefits everyone, and that we avoid the potential pitfalls of this transformative technology.
